The history of Bhutan dates back to the early 2000 BC when the region was called the Valley of South, by the Tibetan people. Bonism was the primary religion of this region which changed into Buddhism with the advent of Guru Rimpoche, a Buddhist monk who spread the teachings of Buddha all over the region. Later the country saw numerous wars and rivalries until Ugyen Wangchuck, then governor of Trongsa was able to gain control over the country and considered himself the first king of Bhutan and set up a dynasty. The Wangchuk dynasty to date rules the country and has brought many changes in its constitution to provide a better quality of life for its citizens.
