Bhutan is a landlocked country in South Asia that has strict visa regulations for foreign visitors. Depending on your nationality and purpose of visit, you may need to apply for a visa in advance or obtain a visa on arrival at the port of entry. To apply for a visa, you need to book a tour with a registered tour operator, pay the minimum nightly rate set by the Tourism Council, have a valid passport, submit proof of your occupation, and provide your contact information and address. Your visa must be approved by the Department of Immigration in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Some nationals are exempt from visa requirements, such as Bangladeshi, Maldivian and Indian nationals, as well as Thai and Swiss nationals holding official and diplomatic passports. If you are coming to Bhutan for official purposes, you may need a diplomatic or official visa, which can be verified and recommended by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade. If you are coming to Bhutan for work, study, business or as a dependent, you may need an employment, student, business or dependent visa, which have different requirements and durations. For more information on visa regulations in Bhutan, please visit the websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, the Tourism Council of Bhutan, and the Embassy of India in Thimphu.

The Royal Government of Bhutan encourages all tourists to travel in groups. However, private custom tours are also allowed. You can book a package holiday to Bhutan through both international and Bhutanese local tour operators. The visit must be preplanned, prepaid and guided. It can either be a group package tour or a customized private travel plan. There is no restriction on visitor numbers. Remember that independent travel is not permitted in Bhutan.
